Ah, I totally planned out this week…. hahahaha – I know, right? That’s where I went wrong. Well, Monday went totally to plan. We did school, we took Cory lunch, we had a chilled afternoon, took Saoirse out to her fave restaurant for her half birthday (Sandwich Express) and we came home and had a half birthday cake for her. Great, huh?
Well, the rest of the week did not go to plan…… Sooooo, here I am, it’s Thursday and I have really not gotten much of anything needed done.
Can I tell you what I do love about homeschool though!?!? It’s adaptable. It’s not rigid and forced like it would be if I were sending S out to school every morning.
Today, the girls woke late and it just felt like the school lesson I had planned on doing wasn’t going to happen. Soooo, instead of that, we decided to do some research. We read a bunch of books (some new awesome ones from MGT coming to a giveaway for you guys next week… keep posted)….. Then we sang some songs from the CD’s again and did a little dinosaur dig. Yup – that’s what Palentologists do, right?
Everything was provided, so I figured we would go ahead and just give it our best shot! We cut out the shapes of the dinosaurs. This was a great task for Saoirse, since she LOVES (understatement of the century) to cut out paper and it was good for her to learn to follow around the lines…. then we grabbed a tray and buried the ‘bones’ and covered it with sand.
The girls both really CAREFULLY got the bones out from underneath the sand and brushed them off with their paintbrushes. Ah, so adorable!
I decided they were having so much fun with this, that we would do something else… we gathered our tote of rice and we ran and grabbed our dinosaur figures from the toy chest. I also gathered a couple of other little toys too, without letting the girls see. We had a couple of horses in there, a cat, a dog and some octonauts! ha!
Their task was to dig deep into the rice and use just their hands to feel around for a dinosaur shape. They had to try and identify it by features that we had learned the last time and if possible, tell it’s name!
Oh boy, it was harder than I thought but we had so much fun. I didn’t get too many pics of the rice game because I was having too much fun playing along myself. You should definitely try it!
Also included with our materials for today were some plastic links. I wasn’t overly excited about them, because, meh, they were plastic links… but, I have got to tell you something. Those links were a HUGE hit! The girls played with them for ages… I can imagine they will still be playing with them in a couple of days.
We had them link up all of the links and count them. Then separate them by color and count them, then by length and measure them with the measuring tape…. endless possibilities from one little bag of plastic colored links. Almost unbelieveable, but fun, fun, fun!
(pics coming soon… I need to get them off my camera, but it has just been ‘that’ week)
